Phone Theft and Snatching in India: The Complete 2026 Guide

Crowd in India with phones held up, where phone theft and snatching are common

Every day in India, phones are snatched at traffic signals, lifted from pockets on crowded buses, and grabbed from hands outside metro stations. Most of these thefts take a second, and most of the damage happens in the hour after, when the thief tries to get into your accounts.

To protect yourself from phone theft in India, do three things: make the phone hard to grab (habits and a wrist tether), make it useless if taken (lock-screen and anti-theft settings, SIM PIN), and know the recovery steps (block the SIM, secure UPI and bank, file a police complaint, and block the IMEI on Sanchar Saathi). This guide covers all three, with a detailed guide for each step.

How phones are actually stolen in India

  • Snatching. A thief, often on a two-wheeler, grabs the phone from your hand at a signal, a footpath edge, or an auto window, and is gone before you react. It depends on the phone coming free of your hand instantly.
  • Pickpocketing. Quiet theft from a pocket or bag in a crowded bus, train, metro, market or festival.
  • Opportunistic theft. A phone left on a café table, a bike seat, a train berth or a charging point.

Each needs a different defence. Read more in Phone Snatching in India: Where It Happens and How Not to Be a Target.

Part 1: Prevent it

Habits that cut most of the risk

  • Walk facing traffic, with the phone in the hand away from the road.
  • Do not use the phone at a signal on a two-wheeler, or near an open auto or cab window.
  • In crowds, keep the phone zipped away, or physically attached to you.
  • Never leave it on a table edge, a bike seat or a berth while you look away.

Accessories that actually help

Most "anti-theft" products protect a phone that is put away. Snatching happens while the phone is in your hand. A wrist tether makes grab-and-run fail because the phone does not come free; a zipped inner pocket or a front-worn bag helps against pickpockets. Important: if someone grabs your phone and pulls hard, let go. No phone is worth a dislocated shoulder or a fall into traffic.

Settings to turn on today

Ten minutes of setup makes a stolen phone far less useful: a strong PIN, hidden lock-screen notifications (so OTPs are not visible), a SIM PIN, Find My Device or Find My, and the newer theft-protection features on Android and iPhone. Step by step in Phone Settings to Turn On Before Your Phone Is Stolen.

Part 2: The first hour after theft

  1. From another phone, call your mobile operator and block the SIM. This stops OTPs reaching the thief.
  2. Call your bank and block UPI, net banking and cards if needed. Report any fraud to 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline) or cybercrime.gov.in.
  3. Lock or locate the phone with Find Hub (Android) or Find My (iPhone), and change your email password. How: How to Track a Lost or Stolen Phone.
  4. Deactivate WhatsApp and warn contacts not to send money if "you" ask.

Part 3: Report, block and recover

  1. File a police complaint at the nearest police station, or online where your state police offers it. Keep the complaint number. Lost report or FIR? See How to File an FIR for a Lost or Stolen Phone.
  2. Block the IMEI on Sanchar Saathi (CEIR). A blocked phone cannot be used on any Indian network, and it becomes traceable if someone puts a new SIM in it. Step by step: How to Block a Stolen Phone with IMEI on Sanchar Saathi.
  3. Get a duplicate SIM from your operator with ID proof, so your number and OTPs come back to you.
  4. If the phone is found, unblock it on the same portal with your request ID.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first if my phone is stolen in India?

From another phone, block your SIM with your operator and call your bank to secure UPI and net banking. Then file a police complaint and block the IMEI on the Sanchar Saathi portal.

Can a stolen phone be blocked in India?

Yes. With a police complaint number, you can block the phone's IMEI on sancharsaathi.gov.in (CEIR). It then cannot be used on any Indian mobile network.

How do I stop my phone being snatched?

Keep it away from the road side, avoid using it at signals and auto windows, keep it zipped away in crowds, and use a wrist tether when it is in your hand. If someone pulls hard, let go.

Does a phone tether stop theft?

It makes grab-and-run snatching fail because the phone does not come free of your wrist. It does not protect a phone in your pocket or bag, and it is not a defence against violent robbery.

What is the cyber crime helpline number in India?

Call 1930, the National Cyber Crime Helpline, or report at cybercrime.gov.in, especially if money has been taken from your account.
