Original vs Duplicate Display: How to Spot a Fake Before It's Fitted

Every shop in India will tell you the display they are fitting is original. Most of them believe it. Fewer of them are right.

There are four grades of replacement display sold in India and only one is genuinely original. The difference is not just quality - a copy panel can drop your 120Hz phone to 60Hz, break the in-display fingerprint sensor, and halve your brightness in sunlight. Here is how to tell what you are being sold, with tests you can run before you pay.

The four grades, plainly

Refurbished original is not a scam and is often the sensible middle choice. The problem is being charged service-pack prices for grade three, or being sold an LCD as an AMOLED.

The substitution that catches most people

If your phone shipped with an AMOLED and you are fitted with an incell LCD, several things change at once - and none of them get mentioned at the counter.

• Blacks stop being black. An OLED switches pixels off; an LCD backlight leaks. In a dark room a dark image looks dark grey.
• Always-on display stops working properly, or the phone drains far faster with it enabled.
• The in-display fingerprint sensor fails or becomes slow. Optical sensors read through the OLED. Most incell panels break this outright, and some shops will tell you the sensor "got damaged in the drop".
• Refresh rate can drop. A 120Hz phone can quietly come back as 60Hz.
• Peak brightness falls, often by half. You notice it the first time you use the phone outdoors.

Tests to run before you pay

Do these in the shop, before money changes hands. A good shop will not mind.

Before it is fitted

1. Ask to see the panel powered on, out of the phone. Any competent shop can do this. Refusal is the loudest signal you will get.
2. Look at the connector ribbon for a manufacturer part number. Blank or hand-marked ribbons mean aftermarket.
3. Ask directly which of the four grades it is, using those words. The answer, and how comfortable they are giving it, tells you a lot.

After it is fitted, before you leave

1. Check the refresh rate in display settings. If your phone supported 120Hz and the option is gone or capped at 60Hz, the panel is not equivalent.
2. Register a fingerprint again. If the in-display sensor is slow, unreliable, or missing, you have an incell panel.
3. Full black image in a dark corner. True black on OLED. Grey glow means LCD.
4. Maximum brightness, then step outside. If it washes out where your old screen did not, brightness is down.
5. Enable always-on display. If it will not enable or looks wrong, the panel is not OLED.
6. Check for a colour cast. Open a white page next to another phone. A green, blue or pink tint means a cheaper panel.
7. Test touch to the very edges, including corners and swipe-in gestures.

Price is a signal, and so is speed

If a genuine panel for your phone costs a shop ₹8,000, nobody is fitting one for ₹4,500 and paying rent. A quote far below everyone else's is telling you the grade.

Same with availability. Genuine service-pack panels for a recent flagship are often on order for days. "Ready in one hour" for a phone launched last month means the part is not what you think it is.

Get it in writing

Ask for a bill that states the part grade and the warranty period. This matters more than it sounds:

• It gives you something to hold them to when the panel dims in four months.
• Genuine parts usually carry three to six months; copies come with fifteen to thirty days, if anything.
• A shop that will not put the grade in writing has told you the answer.

Before you replace anything

Almost certainly because an incell LCD was fitted where your phone needs an OLED. Optical in-display sensors read through the OLED panel and cannot work through most copies. It is a part problem, not drop damage.

Does a duplicate display damage the phone?

Not usually in the immediate term, but copies commonly dim, develop touch dead zones or delaminate within months, and a poorly fitted one can let in dust and moisture that damage the digitizer.
