iPhone Display Replacement in India: Apple or Third-Party? (2026)

iPhone settings screen showing an Unknown Part warning against the Display row after a third-party screen replacement

You crack an iPhone display in India and you get two quotes. Apple wants ₹28,000. The shop in the market wants ₹14,000. The choice looks obvious.

It usually is not, and the reason has nothing to do with panel quality. Apple pairs displays to the logic board, so a screen Apple did not install leaves a permanent "Unknown Part" record, drops True Tone, and can knock up to 30% off your resale value - frequently more than the ₹14,000 you saved. Here is the full decision, including the parts most shops will not mention.

What each route actually charges

Rough 2026 ranges in India, out of warranty:

Route Typical cost Panel Pairing
Apple / authorised service ₹12,000-₹38,000 Genuine, calibrated Paired
AppleCare+ holder ₹2,500 flat Genuine, calibrated Paired
Reputable third-party ₹8,000-₹22,000 Varies Not paired
Local market shop ₹4,000-₹12,000 Often aftermarket Not paired

Model-by-model figures are on our iPhone display and screen repair cost page. This article is about which route to pick, not what your model costs.

What is parts pairing, and why it matters

From the iPhone 11 onward, Apple ties certain components to the logic board they shipped with, using a digital signature stored on the part. When a display is fitted that Apple did not pair, iOS notices.

The critical thing to understand: this reflects the pairing, not the quality of the part. A genuine Apple panel fitted by anyone other than Apple triggers the same result as a cheap aftermarket one. You can pay for a real Apple display and still get flagged.

The three things you lose

1. The "Unknown Part" record

A notice appears on the lock screen for a few days after the repair, then settles permanently into Settings > General > About. It does not go away. Anyone buying your phone can find it in under ten seconds.

2. True Tone

The feature that warms the display to match ambient light simply disappears without pairing or calibration. Day to day this is minor. It is also the easiest way for a buyer to spot an unpaired repair.

3. Face ID - sometimes, and it is worth asking about

This one gets misreported, so here is the accurate version. In 2021 a third-party screen swap on the iPhone 13 disabled Face ID outright; after significant backlash Apple shipped a software fix so an intact Face ID module keeps working through a screen replacement.

But on iPhone 13 and newer the display carries a microcontroller that talks to the Face ID module. If the shop does not transfer the original microcontroller from your old display - which needs microsoldering - or run proper calibration, you can still end up with "Face ID unavailable".

So the question to ask before you hand the phone over is specific: "Will you transfer the original display microcontroller, and will Face ID and True Tone work when I collect it?" A shop that can answer that clearly is a shop worth using. A shop that waves it away is not.

The number that decides it: resale

Here is the calculation almost nobody does.

An "Unknown Part" flag can reduce trade-in and resale value by up to 30%. On a phone still worth ₹80,000 that is ₹24,000 gone - against the ₹14,000 you saved by going third-party. You are ₹10,000 worse off, and you also lost True Tone.

Now run it on a four-year-old iPhone worth ₹18,000. A 30% hit is ₹5,400, and the third-party repair saved you ₹14,000. Third-party wins clearly.

The rule that falls out of this: the newer and more valuable the iPhone, the more the pairing penalty costs you, and the more sense authorised repair makes. On older iPhones you are past the point where it matters.

What changed in 2026

iOS 18.1 introduced Repair Assistant, which lets some third-party and used genuine displays be calibrated by the phone itself after fitting. Where it works, it can restore True Tone and clear the worst of the flags.

Coverage is not universal and it depends on the part and the shop actually running the process. Treat it as a question to ask, not a guarantee - but it does mean advice written before late 2024 is now out of date.

So which should you choose?

Your situation Go with
You have AppleCare+ Apple. ₹2,500 ends the discussion.
Phone under 2 years old, plan to sell or trade in Apple. The resale hit outweighs the saving.
Phone 3+ years old, keeping it until it dies Third-party. The pairing penalty costs you little.
Face ID matters to you Apple, or a shop that confirms microcontroller transfer in writing.
Only the outer glass is cracked, picture and touch fine Neither yet - ask about a glass-only repair first.

The repair you do not have to choose between

Every option above is a bad day. The cheapest iPhone display repair is the one that never happens, and iPhone displays break for an unglamorous reason: the phone leaves your hand.

A wrist tether like PHLOOP clips to your phone through your case, so a slipped grip ends in a swing rather than a fall. At ₹499 it is under 2% of an out-of-warranty iPhone display replacement - and it does not care whether the panel is paired.

Frequently asked questions

How much does iPhone display replacement cost in India?

Between roughly ₹12,000 and ₹38,000 at Apple depending on the model, ₹2,500 flat with AppleCare+, and ₹4,000-₹22,000 through third-party shops. Per-model figures are on our iPhone repair cost page.

Is display replacement the same as screen repair on an iPhone?

Yes - the same job under two names. The distinction that does change the price is glass-only repair versus a full display assembly, so if the picture and touch still work, ask whether only the glass needs replacing. Here is how to tell.

Will Face ID stop working after a third-party screen replacement?

Not automatically - Apple fixed the outright disabling in a software update. But on iPhone 13 and newer, Face ID can still fail if the shop does not transfer the original display microcontroller or run calibration. Ask them directly before agreeing.

Does the "Unknown Part" message ever go away?

No. It stays in Settings > General > About permanently and is visible to anyone buying the phone. Only an Apple-paired display avoids it.

Is a third-party iPhone display worth it?

On an older iPhone you are keeping, usually yes. On a recent iPhone you intend to sell, usually no - the resale reduction commonly exceeds the money saved.

The only display repair that costs nothing is the one you avoid. See how PHLOOP works →
